A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. CHRISTINE SHIRLEY, OF LEE COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HER NINETIETH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY MORE YEARS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Mrs. Christine Shirley will celebrate her ninetieth birthday on October 16, 2007; and

Whereas, Christine Shirley was born October 16, 1917, not long after the dawn of the twentieth century, and as that century and the beginnings of the twenty-first century have brought incredible changes and developments to this nation, Mrs. Shirley has been there to witness nearly all of them; and

Whereas, after reigning as Miss Bishopville in 1936, young Christine became the beloved wife of the late Robert E. Muldrow for forty-eight years until his death in 1985 and later married Louis Shirley, the Lord blessing her with two children, three grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter; and

Whereas, a resident of Lee County for all her ninety years, Mrs. Shirley has been a member of the Bishopville Presbyterian Church for seventy years and has served there as Sunday School teacher, circle chairman, president of the Women of the Church, and vice president of the Women of Harmony Presbytery; and

Whereas, she began her working career as a clerk in the Lee County Sheriff's Office, followed by service in the Clerk of Court's Office, Lee County Memorial Hospital, and the Lee County Library. Appointed probate judge of Lee County in 1960, she subsequently served as civil defense coordinator, where she was instrumental in the organization of the Bishopville Rescue Squad; and

Whereas, not one to forget her civic duty, this personable dynamo has served as a member of the advisory boards of the Department of Health and Environmental Control and Home Health Services, both for the Wateree District, and was cited for outstanding service in Personalities of the South; and

Whereas, Mrs. Shirley is a charter member and past matron of the Bishopville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #74 and has been a member of the Henry DuRant Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for fifty-eight years, having served as DAR regent and secretary for the state convention; and

Whereas, in addition, she has had perfect attendance in the Pilot Club of Bishopville for thirty-seven years, has served in many capacities in that organization, including as president three times, and has been the recipient of its Mildred Henry Davenport Award, given each year to the Pilot who, in personal and community life, most nearly exemplifies the qualities of Pilot; and

Whereas, even with all her other activities, she finds time to enjoy the Bishopville Book Club, the Iris Garden Club, dancing, painting, knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint. Her painting and ballroom dancing have earned her various awards in the United States and Canada; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is proud to honor this truly special lady at the celebration of her ninetieth birthday and joins with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Christine Shirley, of Lee County, on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many more years of health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Christine Shirley.
