A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE HURRICANE BAPTIST CHURCH, OF LAURENS COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF ITS HISTORIC ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY, AND TO COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR NEARLY TWO CENTURIES OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, having been founded between 1764 and 1780, with an official signing of the church constitution in 1832 by some twenty members, Hurricane Baptist Church, of Laurens County, will celebrate its historic one hundred seventy-fifth anniversary in August 2007; and

Whereas, although the earliest records of the church's founding are long since gone, except for the church constitution, it is more than likely that the church began as a circuit stop by a circuit-riding preacher, and existing early records show that the church had both white and black members worshipping equally together; and

Whereas, Hurricane Baptist Church appears on the oldest land grant map, drawn in 1764, and in the records of the British troops from Ninety Six prior to the battle at Musgrove Mill in 1780. The church's existence also is evidenced in historical records of the Battle of Hammond Store, 1781. In further testimony to the church's history, a deed on file in the Laurens County Courthouse from 1798 indicates that John Hunter, Esquire, sold two acres of land to the church for three hundred fifteen dollars; and

Whereas, even the road on which the church is located is a historic one, being the second public works project in the South; and

Whereas, standing on the faith and strength of its early pastors and members, Hurricane Baptist Church's present congregation "press[es] toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14), continuing to preach and teach the Word of God and serving its own, as well as the community; and

Whereas, Hurricane Baptist Church, still at its original location, has been a beacon of light in Laurens County for at least one hundred seventy-five years, and, God willing, will continue its godly heritage in many more years of worship and service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize Hurricane Baptist Church, of Laurens County, on the occasion of its historic one hundred seventy-fifth anniversary, and commend the church for nearly two centuries of service to the community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Hurricane Baptist Church.
