VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE CLOVER HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM FOR ITS STUNNING SUCCESS IN THE 2007 CLASS AAAA DIVISION II STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY, AND TO HONOR THE TEAM'S EXCEPTIONAL PLAYERS, COACHES, AND STAFF.
Whereas, the Blue Eagles of Clover High School defeated the Beaufort Eagles 23-14 on November 30, 2007, at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, to capture the Class AAAA Division II State Championship title; and
Whereas, although trailing the Beaufort Eagles 14-10 at the half, the team returned undaunted to the gridiron from the locker room and dominated the play on both offense and defense in the second half to bring home the championship trophy; and
Whereas, this crowning victory caps an impressive season for the Blue Eagles, with thirteen wins and two losses; and
Whereas, Coach Jet Turner and his assistant coaches, with demanding practices, grueling effort, and dogged determination, forged their football program into a championship team to the delight of admirers and adversaries alike; and
Whereas, since the Clover Blue Eagles had not played in a championship game since 1945, these players and their coaches deserve tribute for their remarkable season and championship victory, which have brought pride to their school and community; and
Whereas, the last time the Clover Blue Eagles played in a state championship game sixty-two years ago, they faced defeat from the very same Beaufort Eagles, making this 2007 victory even more thrilling; and
Whereas, the honorary captains for the two teams had both played in that 1945 game sixty-two years ago: the honorary captain for the Clover Blue Eagles being current House member the Honorable Herbert Kirsh, who treasures his alma mater's success after waiting so long to see it. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate the Clover High School varsity football team for its stunning success in the 2007 Class AAAA Division II State Championship victory, and honor the team's exceptional players, coaches, and staff.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Ron Wright and Coach Jet Turner.
