A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MRS. MELISSA C. RAWL ON THE OCCASION OF BEING NAMED 2008 VIRCO/NASSP ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS FOR HER DISTINGUISHED AND DEDICATED SERVICE AT LEXINGTON HIGH SCHOOL.

Whereas, Melissa C. Rawl, an educator with thirty years of experience in Lexington school districts, received validation of her tireless efforts to educate the students in her charge when the South Carolina Association of School Administrators named her the 2008 Assistant Principal of the Year; and

Whereas, she began her teaching career immediately after receiving a bachelor's degree in English education from the University of South Carolina, and while teaching, she has earned two successive degrees both in English and in education in administration leadership; and

Whereas, having served tirelessly in two schools as an English teacher, including several years teaching advanced placement classes, and as the English department head, Melissa Rawl now assists in the leadership of one of the area's largest schools; and

Whereas, she has garnered numerous honors, such as her inclusion in the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa and her selection as Airport High School Teacher of the Year in 1990-1991, a particularly satisfying honor in that colleagues confer that award; and

Whereas, some distinctive activities which have made her leadership as principal so outstanding include assisting other teachers with their professional development, especially nurturing all first year teachers, and coordinating Camp LHS for new students who matriculate into her school every fall and for the parents of those students;

Whereas, Melissa Rawl's selection resulted from such notable achievements as coordinating the school's Data Team, which uses the data she collects from various standardized tests to formulate goals for the following year, and then supervising the implementation of those plans; and

Whereas, she has additionally more than doubled the number of students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes, while maintaining, through careful planning, the ratio of students who have successfully passed the exams to receive college credit for those courses; and

Whereas, she has reaped the fruit of her zestful productivity, not merely in this award, but most importantly in the lives of her students and in the families she has served. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mrs. Melissa C. Rawl on the occasion of being named 2008 Virco/NASSP Assistant Principal of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators for her distinguished and dedicated service at Lexington High School.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Melissa C. Rawl, assistant principal of Lexington High School.
