VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE JAMES F. BYRNES HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM FOR ITS REMARKABLE UNDEFEATED SEASON AND STELLAR SUCCESS IN CAPTURING THE 2007 CLASS AAAA DIVISION I STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TITLE, AND TO HONOR THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE PLAYERS, COACHES, AND STAFF.
Whereas, the James F. Byrnes High School Rebels completed a stunning 48 to 9 victory over their opponent, Summerville High School Green Wave, in the State championship game on December 1, 2007, at Williams-Brice Stadium; and
Whereas, with less than ten minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Rebels took their modest 10 to 9 lead and bolted ahead 24 to 9, scoring two touchdowns back to back, creating a lead that kept growing and from which Summerville never recovered; and
Whereas, the back-to-back touchdowns resulted from a once-in-a-season play, in which Jordan Miller pooched the kick and defensive back Jamel Watson fell on the ball for an onside recovery; and
Whereas, the daunting James F. Byrnes football team has finished three of its last five seasons undefeated, and has taken its fifth State championship title in six years; and
Whereas, in Coach Chris Miller's first season at Byrnes High School, his team not only went undefeated but also secured its first State championship in Class AAAA Division I; and
Whereas, the entire coaching staff employed their own athletic talent and training skills to mold a championship team and foster excellence through demanding practices and rigorous efforts; and
Whereas, in garnering yet another championship, the athletes of the Rebel football team brought both state and national recognition to their school and community when USA Today ranked the team thirteenth in the country. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate the James F. Byrnes High School varsity football team for its remarkable undefeated season and stellar success in capturing the 2007 Class AAAA Division I State Championship football title, and honor the accomplishments of the players, coaches, and staff.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to James F. Byrnes Principal Jeffrey Rogers and Coach Chris Miller.
