A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE UNO, SOUTH CAROLINA'S CHAMPION BEAGLE, AND HIS HANDLER, AARON WILKERSON, OF LUGOFF, ON WINNING THE 2008 BEST IN SHOW AWARD AT THE WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB'S ANNUAL DOG SHOW IN NEW YORK CITY.

Whereas, although everyone loves a beagle, in the first one hundred thirty-one years of the Westminster Kennel Club's history, not a single member of the breed had won Best in Show at the club's annual dog show; and

Whereas, Uno, a fifteen-inch champion beagle from Lugoff, changed all that on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, when he became the first beagle to take the top prize at the prestigious Westminster show, held at Madison Square Garden in New York City; and

Whereas, on Monday, February 11, the nation's new top dog, formally known as Ch K-Run's Park Me in First, had already become the first beagle since 1939 to win the hound group, and at the Tuesday finals he held the audience in the palm of his paw, drawing forth yells, cheers, and a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd when he was announced the Best in Show winner; and

Whereas, behind this win, the culmination of thirty-two best-in-show and ninety-eight group awards, stood a year and a half of hard work on Uno's part and on the part of his handler, Aaron Wilkerson, of Lugoff, who has been handling dogs full time for the past nine years; and

Whereas, perhaps the nicest compliments paid to the nearly three-year-old Uno came from Newsday.com's Denise Flaim, writing on February 20, 2008: "At [the Best in Show] level, the seven dogs in contention are always good representations of their breed[s]. The deciding factor is that intangible quality called presence. And last Tuesday, no other dog but Uno existed in that big ring. The other six might as well have been wallpaper"; and

Whereas, Flaim continues, "Uno is one of those rare dogs who has it all: He is a near-perfect example of the standard, prompting every judge I have spoken to in the past week to say he is simply the best beagle they have ever seen. He is dead sound, moving effortlessly, as if he could run all day. He has an unshakable temperament, unfazed by the thunderous applause around him. Most important, he has the 'it' factor. Another name for it is quality-difficult to define, but you know it when you see it. And Uno radiated it"; and

Whereas, Uno has brought great pride and recognition to his State, and the House is pleased to have this opportunity to celebrate his history-making victory at the Westminster show. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Uno, South Carolina's champion beagle, and his handler, Aaron Wilkerson, of Lugoff, on winning the 2008 Best in Show award at the Westminster Kennel Club's annual dog show in New York City.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Aaron Wilkerson.
