A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF DEACON ROBERT SHAW EVANS, SR., OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY, CHURCH, MANY FRIENDS, AND COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Orangeburg native Deacon Robert Shaw Evans, Sr., on March 1, 2008; and

Whereas, the son of the late Florence Frederick Evans and John Gary Evans, Sr., Robert Shaw Evans, Sr., was born on January 8, 1932, and in 1956 he earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts from South Carolina State College; and

Whereas, before coming to South Carolina State College in 1961 to serve as assistant director of food service, he worked as a public school teacher and basketball coach at St. John High School in Cameron; and

Whereas, known fondly on campus as "Boss Man," he became director of food service at South Carolina State University in 1964, and he retired after forty years of providing selfless service in administrative oversight to five food facilities and numerous campus functions; and

Whereas, Robert Evans made vital contributions to his community's professional and civic life, including membership in South Carolina State College Quarterback Booster Club, the Mental Health Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the board of directors of Orangeburg-Wilkerson Bruins Booster Club, and the board of commission for the Orangeburg Area Neighborhood Youth Commission; and

Whereas, he held lifetime memberships in the Xi Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8166, the Shriners, the Masonic Lodge Number 1627 in Orangeburg as a thirty-second degree Mason, and an honorary membership in Alpha Psi Omega Dramatic Fraternity; and

Whereas, his numerous honors include the Department of Army Patriotic Civilian Service Award, given for his outstanding services and support to the Reserve Officers' Training Corps at South Carolina State University, the Orangeburg Breakfast Club Award for Education, and the Citizen of the Year Award for 1985 and 1986 from the Xi Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; and

Whereas, in 1986, he was further honored at the ninetieth Founders' Day celebration at South Carolina State University with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, and in 1989, the Robert Shaw Evans Endowed Scholarship was established in his honor. He was also inducted into the university's Athletic Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, twice the city of Orangeburg set aside a day in his honor: first, February 25, 1989, was named the city's Boss Man Day, and then April 16, 2004, was named Robert Shaw Evans, Sr. Day; and

Whereas, he and his beloved wife Beatrice Singleton Evans raised three fine sons, Robert Shaw Evans II, of Atlanta, Dr. Frederick Marshall Gary Evans of Columbia, and James Malcolm Evans of Salt Lake City, Utah. He also had six adoring grandchildren; and

Whereas, as a faithful member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Robert Evans learned the sentiment expressed by the sweet songwriter of Israel when he said, "I was glad when they said unto me, 'Let us go into the house of the Lord.'" From its infancy in 1941, he was a member and became a deacon in 1965 and served in numerous church organizations, including the Youth Outreach Enrichment Program and the Boy Scouts; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause in their deliberations to remember the life of Deacon Robert Shaw Evans, Sr. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Deacon Robert Shaw Evans, Sr., of Orangeburg County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his family, church, many friends, and community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Beatrice Singleton Evans.
