A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE DR. WILLIS C. HAM, OF COLUMBIA, FOR AN AMAZING SPORTS CAREER AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON BEING INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME IN JUNE 2008.

Whereas, Dr. Willis C. Ham, in culmination of an exemplary career in collegiate athletics, will be inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame in June 2008; and

Whereas, beginning his collegiate sports career as a student athlete for South Carolina State University, Willis Ham carried off the school's Freshman of the Year award in both football and baseball during the 1965-1966 school year; and

Whereas, three years later, he was named Athlete of the Year for all sports at South Carolina State and was tapped for all-conference teams in football by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District 29, the Atlanta Daily World 100% Wrong Club, and the South Carolina All-Conference. For the latter, he was the first black student athlete to be so honored; and

Whereas, in 1969, he refused a contract offer to play professional football for the Cincinnati Bengals and signed instead to play professional baseball for the Cincinnati Reds; and

Whereas, having earned his doctorate at Florida State University in 1975, Dr. Ham spent 1975 and 1976 as an assistant football coach at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where the Broncos posted two 7-3 seasons. From 1980 through 1990, he was director of athletics at South Carolina State University, where his program produced forty-three championships, forty-eight male and female All-Americans, and twenty-two Coach of the Year awards; and

Whereas, in recognition of his service to the university's sports program as both student and staff member, Dr. Ham has been selected to the South Carolina State University Athletic Hall of Fame. In addition, he has been named one of the top 100 football student athletes in the university's history; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the General Assembly pauses in its deliberations to recognize the exceptional achievements of Dr. Willis C. Ham, most recently his induction into the NACDA Hall of Fame, and to wish him continued success and fulfillment in the years ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize Dr. Willis C. Ham, of Columbia, for an amazing sports career and congratulate him on being inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame in June 2008.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Willis C. Ham.
