TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. ETHEL MAE HENDERSON TAYLOR, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT FROM FIFTY-EIGHT YEARS IN THE FIELD OF BROADCASTING, AND TO WISH HER SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly express their pleasure upon the eighty-fifth birthday of Dr. Ethel Mae Henderson Taylor and commend her for fifty-eight years of dedication and commitment to excellence in the field of radio broadcasting; and

Whereas, born Ethel Mae Henderson on March 27, 1923, she came from Laurens to attend Benedict College and graduated magna cum laude in 1946; and

Whereas, along with her husband, the late John B. Taylor, she raised nine adoring children. She has fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, after her graduation from Benedict College, she taught English in the Richland County Public School system for thirty years; and

Whereas, in 1950, however, she made history when she became the first female African American radio announcer in South Carolina over the airwaves of WOIC in Columbia; and

Whereas, during the 1950's, she hosted A Date with Ethel and skillfully mixed music with announcements of community events, recipes for listeners' favorite dishes, and recordings of High School Glee Clubs from throughout the midlands; and

Whereas, serving in various capacities over her forty-four years with WOIC, she connected the radio station with its listeners and the community at large; and

Whereas, in 1973, Howard University awarded Ethel Taylor an honorary doctor of philosophy degree after Billboard Magazine named her as one of the Five Top Female Announcers in the United States; and

Whereas, and after earning a master's degree from the University of South Carolina in 1975, she joined the faculty of her alma mater, Benedict College, where she is still an assistant professor of English; and

Whereas, in 1977, Dr. Taylor was named Woman of the Year by the Midlands Chapter of the American Business Women's Association; in 1980 she was recognized as one of Columbia's Ten Outstanding Career Women by the YWCA, and in 1994 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from WOIC radio; and

Whereas, fourteen years ago, Dr. Taylor joined the staff of Glory Communications' WFMV where she has hosted Golden Gospel Memories; and

Whereas, a faithful member of St. Mark's Baptist Church, Dr. Taylor received special recognition in 1999 for thirty-three years as church musician; and

Whereas, she has served as president of the Richland County Education Association, the first African American president of the Midland's Chapter of the American Business Women's Association, secretary for the Lincoln Park Community Association, and also a term as president of the Benedict College National Alumni Association; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly pause to express their appreciation to Ethel Mae Henderson Taylor for her life of service to God, her family, and her community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Ethel Mae Henderson Taylor, of Richland County, upon the occasion of her retirement from fifty-eight years in the field of broadcasting, and wish her success and happiness in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Ethel Mae Henderson Taylor.
