VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM, OF MYRTLE BEACH, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE PLAYERS AND COACHES FOR FINISHING A SUCCESSFUL SEASON AND CAPTURING THE 2008 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CLASS A STATE BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were pleased to learn that Christian Academy garnered the 2008 South Carolina Independent School Association Class A State Boys Basketball Championship title over Laurens Academy; and
Whereas, with only twenty-two students in grades nine through twelve, Christian Academy fielded a fledgling team of only eight players, and the starters boasted two juniors and three freshmen; and
Whereas, in their first season of varsity competition, the Christian Academy Saints entered the championship with an enviable record of eleven wins and only one loss; and
Whereas, on February 16, 2008, to the delight of their admirers and the disappointment of their adversaries, the Saints bested the Laurens Academy Crusaders in a stunning 53-40 victory for the nascent team; and
Whereas, in demanding practices and with relentless effort, the Christian Academy Saints learned a man-to-man defense that the Crusaders were never able to overcome in the final game; and
Whereas, forward Jay Lang, point guard P. C. Henry, and another forward Chris Underwood led the Saints in scoring, all with double digits. Jay Lang had eighteen points with eleven rebounds, P. C. Henry had twelve points with eight assists, and Chris Underwood, one of the freshman starters, scored eleven points and numerous rebounds; and
Whereas, dressed in tie-dyed t-shirts with the school's blue and red, the Christian Academy's "sixth man" cheered in force throughout the game for the Saints to show the support of the entire school; and
Whereas, during the game, each player wore a wrist band with the number 41, which was prominently displayed when the team accepted their award, to honor seriously injured middle-school player Weston Brewer; and
Whereas, in a game that requires speed, strength, endurance, and skill, Coach Darren Gore used his own athletic ability and experience to forge a championship basketball team, which has brought pride and recognition to the school and community; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives commend the team and coaches of Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach for competing, as Saint Paul admonished in I Corinthians 9:24, in such a way as to receive the prize. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Christian Academy boys basketball team, of Myrtle Beach, and congratulate the players and coaches for finishing a successful season and capturing the 2008 South Carolina Independent School Association Class A State Boys Basketball Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Dave Bower and Coach Darren Gore.
