A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE SUMMERVILLE HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR A WINNING SEASON, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE PLAYERS AND COACHES FOR CAPTURING THE 2008 CLASS AAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were pleased to learn of the successful season for the Summerville boys basketball team and of the team's state championship victory; and

Whereas, at a school known for legendary football victories, the boys basketball team boasted a season with twenty-five wins and only three losses, and Summerville finished this season with a twenty-seven-game home-court winning streak; and

Whereas, on February 29, 2008, the Summerville Green Wave leaped to its first state basketball championship title in the final seconds of the game in Columbia against rival Spartanburg Vikings; and

Whereas, in the up-to-the-wire, nail-biting finish, every Green Wave basket, blocked shot, drive, free throw, foul, and rebound made a difference, delighting admirers and dashing adversaries; and

Whereas, with a season-high twenty-three points, senior A. J. Green posted almost half of the team's final score before he fouled out, and in the final seconds of play, Branden Millhouse made the free throws that ultimately decided the game; and

Whereas, the game was finally determined by the referees after they judged that a Spartanburg "Hail Mary" from behind mid-court had left the Viking hands after the buzzer, and Summerville won 50-48; and

Whereas, the team had dedicated this season to the memory of their assistant coach Louis Mulkey, one of the nine firefighters who lost their lives on June 18, 2007, in the Sofa Super Store fire, and they brought home the title for "The Fireman," as he was fondly called, with his widow Lauren Mulkey present to share the victory; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that the Green Wave has come ashore with a state championship victory for the varsity boys basketball team. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Summerville High School boys basketball team for a winning season, and congratulate the players and coaches for capturing the 2008 Class AAAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Tee Newman, Lauren Mulkey, and Roger Edwards, Summerville High School principal.
