VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MUNSON BUFORD FRANKLIN, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS NINETIETH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HIM MANY MORE YEARS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Buford Franklin will reach the momentous milestone of ninety years on April 21, 2008; and
Whereas, born in Newberry County on April 21, 1918, Munson Buford Franklin was named for Sheriff Munson Buford who served Newberry County in the mid-1800's; and
Whereas, the son of the late Augustus and Benjamin Franklin, he attended Newberry College for a year and then earned a bachelor's degree from Berry College in Rome, Georgia; and
Whereas, although he did not serve in the Armed Forces during World War II, Buford Franklin proudly served his country's war effort by working on ships in Charleston during the war years; and
Whereas, in 1950, he married his loving wife Jeanette, and together they raised five children, Jon, Karen, Ramon, Mary, and Lori, until cancer took his precious partner in 1967. His children have given him eight adoring grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and
Whereas, in 1972, he married Gladys, and they were happily married more than twenty years before her death. In 1996, he married his beloved Virginia, and they will celebrate twelve years of marriage in August; and
Whereas, a man of compassion always willing to lend a helping hand, Buford Franklin worked for thirty years as an occupational therapist in industrial therapy at the State Hospital in Columbia; and
Whereas, beginning even before his work with occupational therapy patients at the State Hospital, his enjoyment of woodworking has produced many pieces of art and beauty both from his lathe and from his hands that are remembered lovingly by his family; and
Whereas, his devotion and service to his church were evident at St. Andrews Lutheran Church where he selflessly cared for the facilities and volunteered on countless projects; and
Whereas, he also served his community for more than a decade as president of the Ruritan Club, whose purpose is to make America's communities better places in which to live and work, by creating a better understanding among people through volunteer community service; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful that Buford Franklin has reached the marker of his ninetieth birthday and acknowledge that he has chosen the better path and followed the lesson taught by the wise king of Israel in Proverbs 22:1, "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches." Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Munson Buford Franklin, of Richland County, upon the occasion of his ninetieth birthday, and wish him many more years of health and happiness.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Munson Buford Franklin.
