A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE PRESBYTERIAN COMMUNITIES OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY, AND TO COMMEND THE ORGANIZATION UPON HALF A CENTURY OF DEDICATED SERVICE IN THIS GREAT STATE.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the House of Representatives congratulates Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina upon the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary and appreciatively acknowledges its outstanding record of service; and

Whereas, looking forward to the formal dedication on May 4, 1958, the first residents of the new Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, as it was called, moved on January 12, 1958, into their long-awaited retirement community, but discussions had begun on the need for such a place ten years before; and

Whereas, in 1948, the Presbyterians in South Carolina concluded that it was time for a church-sponsored retirement home in the State, and they settled on Summerville as its proposed site. Generous gifts of land from two families gave the new venture the acreage it needed, and a statewide fund campaign authorized in 1954 brought in the necessary monies to build an appropriate facility. With the Reverend Dr. Charles Robert Tapp in place as its first superintendent, the facility's cornerstone was laid on October 7, 1956; and

Whereas, heavy demand in the 1960's brought frequent additions to the Summerville facility, and the need for further homes across the State became clear. One by one, new retirement homes in Clinton (1975), Florence (1981), Columbia (1986), and Greenville (1998) were built and became part of the organization, now known as Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina; and

Whereas, today, Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina serves hundreds of South Carolinians in all its varied locations. Although it was initially planned for South Carolina Presbyterians, its statewide expansion now allows it to serve a clientele unrestricted by Presbyterian church affiliation; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina's fifty years of committed service to the citizens of this State, and the members extend best wishes for many more years of blessing to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina upon the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary, and commend the organization upon half a century of dedicated service in this great State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina.
