A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE, HONOR, AND RECOGNIZE MARY MCLEOD TYLER, ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST DEDICATED AND DISTINGUISHED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS, UPON HER ATTAINING THE AGE OF FOUR SCORE AND TEN YEARS, AND FOR HER OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SCHOOL CHILDREN OF SOUTH CAROLINA DURING HER TWENTY-NINE YEAR TEACHING CAREER.

Whereas, Mary McLeod Tyler, one of South Carolina's most dedicated and distinguished elementary school teachers, celebrated her ninetieth birthday on January 11, 2008, having been born on January 11, 1918, in Sumter, South Carolina; and

Whereas, she was the eighth of nine children born to the Reverend Dr. Daniel Melvin McLeod, one of South Carolina's most prominent Methodist ministers, and Bertie Guyton McLeod. She was reared in Methodist parsonages in Sumter, Marion, Charleston, and Florence and was thirteen years old when her father died in December 1931; and

Whereas, Mary McLeod graduated from Florence High School in 1934, and at age sixteen, entered Columbia College. Shortly thereafter, her mother relocated the family to Columbia where they became active members of College Place United Methodist Church; and

Whereas, Mary McLeod graduated from Columbia College in 1938, and in the fall of that year, she began her elementary school teaching career at St. George Grammar School in Dorchester County, where she taught for two years; and

Whereas, on June 29, 1940, Mary McLeod married Edmund Morrison Tyler, of Estill, South Carolina, who subsequently entered the United States Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific Theatre, and was discharged from naval service in December 1945; and

Whereas, from the union of Edmund M. Tyler and Mary McLeod Tyler, three sons were born: Ned Tyler, Commander, United States Coast Guard, (Retired), of Dunkirk, Maryland; Russell Tyler of Moncks Corner, and Tim Tyler of Estill; and

Whereas, during the years 1940-1952, Mary McLeod Tyler chose to devote her time and talents to her family, but the thought of molding young minds in the elementary classroom continued to attract her interest; and

Whereas, beginning with the school year 1952-1953, Mary McLeod Tyler followed her inclination by returning to the classroom and served as an elementary school teacher in the Columbia City School System for sixteen years until 1968 when her family relocated to Estill; and

Whereas, beginning in 1968, Mary McLeod Tyler's elementary school teaching career continued at Patrick Henry Academy in Estill. She retired in 1979, having devoted a total of twenty-nine years to teaching elementary school students in South Carolina; and

Whereas, upon relocating to Estill, Mary McLeod Tyler became an active member of Estill United Methodist Church, where she maintains her membership, although she presently resides in Moncks Corner with her son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Linda Cochran (Sweetheart) Tyler. In addition to her three sons, Mary McLeod Tyler has three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mary McLeod Tyler has been an outstanding elementary school teacher and has brought honor and credit to the teaching profession, and the members of the House of Representatives are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize her on her ninetieth birthday which is being celebrated with a reception in her honor on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the Tyler vacation cottage in McClellanville, South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate, honor, and recognize Mary McLeod Tyler, one of South Carolina's most dedicated and distinguished elementary school teachers, upon her attaining the age of four score and ten years, and for her outstanding contributions to the school children of South Carolina during her twenty-nine year teaching career.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mary McLeod Tyler.
