A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR BISHOP PRESTON WARREN WILLIAMS II FOR HIS FOUR YEARS OF SERVICE AS PRESIDING PRELATE OF THE 7TH EPISCOPAL DISTRICT (SOUTH CAROLINA) OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of South Carolina are pleased to learn that Bishop Preston Warren Williams II has reached his fourth anniversary as presiding prelate of the 7th Episcopal District (South Carolina) of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; and

Whereas, in preparation for his calling into the ministry, Bishop Williams attended Morris Brown College and Southeastern University and earned a Master of Divinity from Turner Theological Seminary Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He also attended the Yale University Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut, and earned his doctorate from Wesley Theological Seminary at American University in Washington, D.C. In addition, he has received several honorary degrees; and

Whereas, a gifted preacher, teacher, leader, and social activist, Bishop Williams is often sought after for his power to illuminate biblical scripture. He gives freely of his time to worthy causes in South Carolina and beyond, serving as chairman of the board of Allen University in Columbia, a member of the governing board of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., and, from 2006 to 2007, president of the global Council of A.M.E. Bishops; and

Whereas, having previously served in Africa and Atlanta for many years, Bishop Williams took up his duties as presiding prelate of the 7th Episcopal District (South Carolina) of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 2004. His reputation preceded him, as he already had become known for expansion of his churches, for continually encouraging both clergy and laity to pursue higher education and helping many to achieve it, and for generating numerous projects that have benefited untold numbers of disadvantaged individuals; and

Whereas, among his achievements since beginning his labors in the Palmetto State, this spiritual shepherd partnered in July 2005 with the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice in a collective effort to provide the State's at-risk youth with support and services designed to maximize their potential as positive and productive members of society; and

Whereas, Bishop Williams considers one of his crowning achievements as having had the good sense to marry his beloved Wilma Delores and to raise with her four fine children, Arnold Andre, a physicist; twins Wilma Priscilla, a chemist, and Stella Jacinta, a geologist; and Prestina Delores, a television news anchor and reporter; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the General Assembly express to Bishop Williams their best wishes for many more years of fruitful service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, honor Bishop Preston Warren Williams II for his four years of service as presiding prelate of the 7th Episcopal District (South Carolina) of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Bishop Preston Warren Williams II.
