A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CELEBRATE THE OCCASION OF THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TOWN OF HILTON HEAD ISLAND, AND TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND MAYOR TOM PEEPLES AND THE CITIZENS OF HILTON HEAD ISLAND FOR A QUARTER CENTURY OF DISPLAYING LOWCOUNTRY CHARM AND HOSPITALITY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to recognize that twenty-five years ago on May 10, 1983, residents voted to incorporate their community into the Town of Hilton Head Island; and

Whereas, the island was named for English Captain William Hilton who sighted the high bluffs and noted the "sweet water and clear sweet air" of the island in August of 1663 while he was exploring the Port Royal Sound; and

Whereas, in 1951, electricity arrived on the island, and in 1960 the first telephone came, and during this time farsighted businessmen purchased a large portion of the land for development that would protect the island's flora and fauna, which established a prototype in preserving the natural environments of other developments; and

Whereas, Hilton Head Island boasts resplendent lowcountry beaches, marshes, coastlines, and sunsets that make it a haven for its citizens and golf courses, marinas, and outstanding tennis facilities that create an alluring delight for tourists; and

Whereas, the refreshing and serene seaside that beautifies Hilton Head is complemented by its citizenry, some eight thousand in 1983 and over forty thousand today, who demonstrate the finest Palmetto State hospitality; and

Whereas, in a ceremony on May 13, 2008, highlighting some of the major achievements and people who have impacted its growth, the town plans to mark the anniversary of receiving its incorporation charter from the State; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly take pleasure in recognizing the twenty-fifth anniversary of Hilton Head Island and express their gratitude for the island's contributions to our fine State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, celebrate the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the town of Hilton Head Island, and congratulate and commend Mayor Tom Peeples and the citizens of Hilton Head Island for a quarter century of displaying lowcountry charm and hospitality.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mayor Tom Peeples.
