VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
CONGRATULATING THE NEWBERRY COLLEGE LADY INDIANS BASKETBALL TEAM ON THEIR SECOND CONSECUTIVE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE, COMMENDING THEM ON THEIR DEDICATION AND TEAMWORK, AND WISHING THEM MUCH SUCCESS IN FUTURE SEASONS.
Whereas, the Lady Indians, winning the 2006-07 South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Championship title, became the first program in Newberry College athletics history to win back-to-back SAC championships; and
Whereas, the final game had the Newberry Indians defeating the Carson-Newman Eagles in a 67-62 victory, ensuring the Lady Indians a third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs; and
Whereas, for most of the game, Indian victory seemed assured. However, the final five minutes became a tight contest, with only the team that had excellent teamwork, dedication, and drive prevailing; and
Whereas, through tireless efforts by the entire team, impressive pressure defense strategies, and excellent coaching, the lady Indians moved past the Eagles to secure a win; and
Whereas, the team, led by Coach Jason Brink, is comprised of Monica Alexander, Angela Smith, Tiffany Smalls, Tosha Goodman, Tygress Hope, Tonique Frasier, Brandi Gray, Cicely Jenkins, Dezzire Gilliard, Ashley Marine, Laura Marquardt, Ashlee Wright, and Anita Bulcher; and
Whereas, two players, Tonique Frasier and Ashlee Wright were named to the All-Tournament team, with Wright also voted the 2007 SAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player; and
Whereas, basketball requires individual strength, agility, and skill, of which the 2006-07 team was filled, the Lady Indians were able to win a second consecutive SAC title because of their dedicated teamwork and unwavering commitment to solidarity; and
Whereas, it was the dedication throughout the season, the hard work during practice, and the commitment to teamwork that enabled the Indians to move past the Eagles in a trying final few minutes. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the Newberry College Lady Indians basketball team on their second consecutive SAC Championship title, commend them on their dedication and teamwork, and wish them much success in future seasons.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Jason Brink and the entire Newberry College Lady Indians basketball team.
