A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF MR. M. GAULT BEESON OF MARION COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr. M. Gault Beeson on Monday, June 4, 2007, at the venerable age of eighty-five; and

Whereas, he was born on the family farm in Mullins in 1921 to Amanda Price Beeson and Emory Andrew Beeson and was one of thirteen children; and

Whereas, Mr. Beeson served as Marion County's administrator beginning in 1948 until his retirement in 1987 from the post; and

Whereas, a Marion County icon, he was well-liked by all who were privileged to know him. He managed to win the admiration and respect of his colleagues, as well as the people he served over his lifetime spent in the county; and

Whereas, during his service of nearly four decades as Marion County's administrator, he was known as a truly fine man who represented the centerpiece of the county and who is credited with making Marion County what it is today; and

Whereas, fittingly, Mr. Beeson's portrait hangs in the Marion County Courthouse which he worked so diligently to renovate and preserve during his tenure in the county administration; and

Whereas, he also served with distinction on the Marion County Board of Commission and had the building which houses the county's Department of Social Services, the Clemson Extension Office, and the health department named in his honor; and

Whereas, Mr. Beeson also found time to breed his beloved prized-hunting beagles at his "Sandspur Hill" dog pen, and he was an avid baseball fan and a life-long New York Giants' fan; and

Whereas, he was blessed with a wonderful family, including his beloved wife, Katharine; three sons: M. G. "Bunny" Beeson, Jr., Michael Beeson, and Frank Beeson; one daughter, Polly Beeson Johnson; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren of whom he was quite proud; and

Whereas, because of the high esteem in which he was held by the people of South Carolina for his accomplishments and contributions to Marion County, in 1988, after his retirement, he was honored with a Concurrent Resolution recognizing and commending him for his tremendous insight, wisdom, and integrity and for his dedicated service and illustrious leadership which brought honor and distinction to Marion County and its citizens; and

Whereas, Mr. Beeson admirably served his county and local community, as well as the State, unselfishly in countless ways, but he will always be remembered for his great love of Marion County and as a master at maintaining the county. The loss of this dedicated public servant is indeed felt by many South Carolinians but certainly his legacy will withstand the passage of time. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Mr. M. Gault Beeson of Marion County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Katharine Beeson.
