TO MEMORIALIZE THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES TO RAISE THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE TO $7.00 AN HOUR OR MORE.
Whereas, the federal minimum wage was last raised on September 1, 1997, a period of almost a decade ago; and
Whereas, this nearly ten-year period is the longest stretch of time in the nation's history during which the federal minimum wage has not been raised; and
Whereas, no one can meet even the most basic expenses on the current federal minimum wage of $5.15 an hour; and
Whereas, over the past nine years, many states have taken matters into their own hands and passed their own minimum-wage increases, for a total of twenty-nine states that have, or plan to have, a minimum wage higher than the federal minimum wage; and
Whereas, the federal government should not lag behind state governments in rightly addressing this issue, which makes appeal to our national sense of morality, as well as to our national sense of economic fairness and justice. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, memorialize the Congress of the United States to raise the federal minimum wage to $7.00 an hour or more.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the United States Senate, the United States House of Representatives, and to each member of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation.
