TO HONOR THE PELION PEANUT FESTIVAL IN LEXINGTON COUNTY, AUGUST 9-11, 2007, AND RECOGNIZE THE FESTIVAL'S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE TOWN, COUNTY, AND STATE.
Whereas, the Pelion Peanut Festival in Lexington County is being held this year August 9-11; and
Whereas, the "Peanut Party", as it has come to be known, has been going on for twenty-six years, beginning on August 28, 1982; and
Whereas, this year the festival is a three-day event with carnival rides, food vendors, a parade, live entertainment, and a craft show; and
Whereas, the dream of a peanut party was conceived by the Town of Pelion's elected officials and community members proud of their heritage; and
Whereas, the event is conducted in conjunction with the South Carolina Peanut Board and Cromer's Peanuts with proceeds having been used for the rescue squad, fire department, high school booster club, various other community and school activities, a scholarship for a town doctor, and the Pelion Branch of the circulating Lexington County Library; and
Whereas, today the Pelion Ruritans boil the peanuts for the peanut party, boiling the peanuts all day and night with their secret recipe; and
Whereas, this notable festival has contributed much goodwill and added needed programs and activities which has improved the quality of living for the citizens of Pelion, Lexington County, and the State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly wish to honor the Pelion Peanut Festival in Lexington County, August 9-11, 2007, and recognize the festival's contributions to the town, county, and State.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Mayor of Pelion.
