TO HONOR DR. MARY TUCK KENNERLY, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, FOR TWENTY-THREE YEARS OF SERVICE AS PRINCIPAL OF NURSERY ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Dr. Mary Tuck Kennerly, of Richland County, for thirty-seven years has filled the posts of both teacher and principal with dignity and excellence; and
Whereas, in preparation for her career as an educator, Dr. Kennerly earned a bachelor of arts degree at Columbia College, a master's degree at Georgia State University, and a doctorate at the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, she began her career as a teacher, moving into administration first as assistant principal for two years and then as principal of Nursery Road Elementary, School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties, where she has served with distinction for the past twenty-three years; and
Whereas, during Dr. Kennerly's tenure as principal of Nursery Road Elementary School, she has guided her school in capturing numerous awards, such as being selected a Palmetto's Finest, National Blue Ribbon, and Red Carpet school, as well as a School of Promise. To the great enrichment of her school, she has won many grants totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars and led Nursery Road Elementary into the future with a sure and steady hand; and
Whereas, in addition to fostering achievements by her school during her administration, this veteran of public school education has herself received many honors, among them being named District Five PTA Principal of the Year. Moreover, she was the recipient of Columbia College's Wil Lou Gray Outstanding Educator Award and the Hope Worldwide Outstanding Service Award, was named to Who's Who in American Education, and was the first female principal from South Carolina to be invited to attend the Principal's Center Harvard Graduate School; and
Whereas, also dedicated to serving children beyond the schoolhouse, Dr. Mary Tuck Kennerly organized the first after-school program in School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties in cooperation with the Lexington County Recreation Commission, arranged a tutoring program and Homework Club at the subsidized housing complexes that feed into her school, facilitated a Saturday Academy for struggling students through Hope Worldwide, and organized the Irmo High School Voter Registration Project; and
Whereas, as the wife of Dr. Ken Kennerly, mother of two sons, David and Josh, and grandmother of two, she understands firsthand the concerns of her students' parents; and
Whereas, Dr. Kennerly, taking her responsibilities with the seriousness they deserve, has labored diligently as an educator for the educational welfare of South Carolina's children and has well repaid the trust placed in her by this great State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor Dr. Mary Tuck Kennerly, of Richland County, for twenty-three years of service as principal of Nursery Road Elementary School upon the occasion of her retirement, and extend best wishes for much success and happiness in all her future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Mary Tuck Kennerly.
