A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE BISHOP EDWARD SMITH ON THE OCCASION OF HIS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY AS PASTOR OF THE PROGRESSIVE CHURCH OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST IN DENMARK.

Whereas, among the most admirable and significant vocations to which a man may be called is that of nurturing the souls of his fellow men; and

Whereas, Bishop Edward Smith, pastor of the Progressive Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Denmark for the past fifty years, has proven himself to be among those dedicated men of God who are indeed nurturers of souls; and

Whereas, from humble beginnings since his 1957 acceptance of this pastorate, Bishop Smith has grown his Denmark congregation from about fifteen members to its current thriving numbers, in the process successfully overcoming seemingly insuperable obstacles and winning the love and loyalty of his congregation; and

Whereas, during the fifty years of his faithful tenure, Bishop Smith has seen the church established on sixteen acres of land and now envisions future housing for the elderly and a school next to the church; and

Whereas, Bishop Smith is married to the former Edna M. Friday, his beloved wife of more than fifty years, the two of them together having raised three fine children, William, David, and Joyce, who have blessed their parents with three grandchildren, David, Brandon, and Adrienne. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate Bishop Edward Smith on the occasion of his fiftieth anniversary as pastor of the Progressive Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Denmark.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Bishop Edward Smith.
