TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE UNITED STATES SENATOR FROM ILLINOIS, BARACK OBAMA, FOR HIS VICTORY IN THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY HELD ON JANUARY 26, 2008.
Whereas, the Democratic primary in South Carolina focused national media attention on the importance of the Palmetto State in the process to nominate a candidate; and
Whereas, by the enthusiasm produced by the Democratic campaign and the vigor it stimulated among the South Carolina electorate, almost a quarter of a million more citizens exercised their constitutional right to vote in this Democratic primary than did so in 2004; and
Whereas, Senator Obama received more votes than were cast for all the candidates in the 2004 primary, and South Carolina provided his first state primary victory as of January 26, 2008; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly congratulate Senator Obama on the victory he garnered in the South Carolina Democratic primary. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate the United States Senator from Illinois, Barack Obama, for his victory in the South Carolina Democratic primary held on January 26, 2008.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Senator Barack Obama.
