A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR INVESTIGATOR ROBERT S. SMITH, OF THE COLUMBIA POLICE DEPARTMENT, FOR TWENTY YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF COLUMBIA, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that on February 29, 2008, Columbia Police Department Investigator Robert S. Smith will have served the citizens of Columbia for twenty years and that with his wife Gladys, a native of Sumter, he plans to enjoy his retirement beginning on March 14, 2008; and

Whereas, Robert Smith, a Columbia native, began a career in law enforcement as a correctional officer, serving from 1978 to 1982, with the South Carolina Department of Corrections; and

Whereas, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and worked with the Atlanta Police Department from June 1982 until October 1983, when he returned to Columbia to work as a deputy with the Richland County Sheriff's Department for three years before joining the Columbia Police Department; and

Whereas, in his twenty years with the Columbia Police Department, he has served in the narcotics division and in criminal investigations and as a patrolman; and

Whereas, during one of his assignments, he worked with residents involved in the Selected Traffic Enforcement Program, which enabled them to address specific traffic concerns, and he successfully and significantly reduced the speed of motorists on the section of Beltline Boulevard between and Covenant and Two Notch Roads due to his perseverance over several months; and

Whereas, since he joined the Columbia Police Department, he has received great satisfaction working with the citizens of his hometown, and his efforts on their behalf and his commitment to their neighborhoods have elicited deep appreciation from businesses and homeowners alike; and

Whereas, Robert has had a serious hobby of collecting old music and hopes one day to operate a small radio station, so the members of the South Carolina General Assembly express gratitude to him for his years of service in law enforcement and anticipate hearing him over the airwaves in the future. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Investigator Robert S. Smith, of the Columbia Police Department, for twenty years of faithful service to the citizens of Columbia, and wish him much success in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Robert S. Smith.
