A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE STEVEN E. MATTISON, OF LEXINGTON COUNTY, BUSINESS MANAGER FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION IN COLUMBIA, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives note that, after almost thirty-two years of service to the State of South Carolina, Steven E. Mattison is retiring from the position of business manager for the University of South Carolina College of Education in Columbia; and

Whereas, in preparation for his life's work, Steve Mattison earned his Bachelor of Science in finance and Master of Business Administration at the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, beginning his career as interim business manager for the Anderson County Department of Health, Mr. Mattison later served as budget director and director of community contracts for the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs before coming to the College of Education in 1994, where he has served for the past fourteen years; and

Whereas, much has changed at the College of Education in the fourteen years since Steve Mattison began his service there, and he has been of invaluable assistance in guiding the college through the financial ramifications of those changes. Among other things, he has dealt successfully with tremendous budget growth, an increased emphasis on external funding, and several changes in college administration; and

Whereas, not one to neglect his civic duty, Mr. Mattison serves on the Irmo Fire Commission, having been appointed by Governor David M. Beasley, and is the recipient of a Distinguished Public Service Award from the Irmo Fire District. He is also active at St. Andrews Baptist Church as a deacon and is a former vice president of the Irmo/St. Andrews Coalition of Homeowners' Associations. In his spare time, he reads to second graders at Rhame Elementary School; and

Whereas, during his richly-deserved retirement, he plans to enjoy more time with his family, wife Jeanette; daughter Jessica, who attends the College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina and previously served as a page for Legislative Council; and son Philip, a junior in mechanical engineering at the University of South Carolina who served as a page in the office of Senator Ronnie Cromer; and

Whereas, his colleagues, who appreciate his cheerfulness, sense of humor, and gentlemanly kindness, say he will spend at least some of his newly discovered free time indulging a continuing enthusiasm for the South Carolina Gamecocks (win or lose), an interest that is exceeded only by an intense devotion to his family; and

Whereas, having made his mark and set the bar of achievement high, Steve Mattison will be remembered with affection and gratitude by colleagues and other professional friends for years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Steven E. Mattison, of Lexington County, business manager for the University of South Carolina College of Education in Columbia, for his outstanding service upon the occasion of his retirement, and wish him much success and happiness in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Steven E. Mattison.
