TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR YORK COUNTY AS A VITAL PART OF THIS STATE, AND TO DECLARE APRIL 30, 2008, YORK COUNTY DAY IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly pause to recognize the contributions of York County, which showcase the variety and strength of our great State; and
Whereas, York County population is the third fastest growing in the State, with an increase that has exceeded twenty percent during the past six years, and York County is home to almost two hundred thousand South Carolinians, which is nearly five percent of the state's total population; and
Whereas, York County's estimated assessment of real and manufacturing property exceeded six hundred forty million dollars, a thirteen percent increase from the previous year and over four percent of the state's total assessment of real and manufacturing property; and
Whereas, last year's thirty-seven announcements of new economic development in York County provided a total investment of over seventy-two million dollars for the State and the creation of more than twelve hundred jobs for South Carolinians; and
Whereas, York County was the state's seventh best county in production in retail sales last year, an increase of five percent over the previous year; the county provided almost five billion dollars to the state's economy and nearly four percent of South Carolina's total retail sales; and
Whereas, the citizens of York County passed the county's own one-cent sales tax in 1997 and again in 2003 to collect a total of two hundred seventy-two million dollars to be used to pay for critical road improvements, which also enhance the efficiency of the state's road system; and
Whereas, York County is one of the top three counties in the State in the categories of median household income, percent of academically gifted students, starting salaries for new teachers, and average salaries for teachers, all of which are important in moving the entire State forward; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly express their high regard for the contributions of York County to our fine State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor York County as a vital part of this State, and declare April 30, 2008, York County Day in South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to each of the four chambers of commerce in York County.
