A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE ADMINISTRATORS AND STAFF OF THE LITTLE RIVER MEDICAL CENTER, IN HORRY COUNTY, FOR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP IN THE TREATMENT OF DIABETES AND IN ADDRESSING THE HEALTH CARE NEEDS OF THEIR COMMUNITY, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR BEING NAMED THE RECIPIENT OF A 2008 JOHNSON AND JOHNSON CRYSTAL AWARD.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives express sincere appreciation to the Little River Medical Center for the vital medical services it offers to citizens of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the Little River Medical Center is a not-for-profit community health facility that provides medical care for underserved residents of Horry County; and

Whereas, realizing that minorities in South Carolina are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes and three times as likely to die from complications associated with diabetes, in 2003 the Little River Medical Center began to work with federal agencies to treat diabetic patients in the community; and

Whereas, the Little River Medical Center has successfully participated in the Diabetes Collaborative of the federal Health Resources Service Administration and has nearly seven hundred patients under its care; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Johnson and Johnson awarded the Community Healthcare Award to the Little River Medical Center for its work in addressing the community's medically underserved patients. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend the administrators and staff of the Little River Medical Center, in Horry County, for outstanding leadership in the treatment of diabetes and in addressing the health care needs of their community, and congratulate them for being named the recipient of a 2008 Johnson and Johnson Crystal Award.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Little River Medical Center.
