TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE JEROME SIMPSON, FORMER STAR WIDE RECEIVER OF THE COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL TEAM, ON HIS GREAT ATHLETICISM, INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE TEAM, AND FOR BEING DRAFTED BY THE CINCINNATI BENGALS IN THE RECENT NFL DRAFT, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Jerome Simpson became the highest and second ever National Football League draft pick from Coastal Carolina University or the Big South Conference when he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the recent NFL draft; and
Whereas, a native of Reidsville, North Carolina, Simpson starred in football, basketball, and track at Reidsville High School, where his football talent earned him spots on Shrine Bowl and East-West game teams; and
Whereas, as a member of the Chanticleers football squad for four seasons, Simpson shattered numerous records, eventually holding the school's single-game, single-season, and career receiving records for receptions, yardage, and touchdowns. Simpson broke Coastal Carolina and Big South Conference records with 157 catches and 41 touchdowns. His career at Coastal Carolina included a phenomenal 1,077-yard, 16-touchdown season in 2006, not to mention record-breaking performances on the track team that led to his appearance in the NCAA National Championships in track; and
Whereas, the talent and hard work that brought Simpson great success on the high school and collegiate gridiron impressed observers at the NFL combine in 2008, where he set an NFL combine record with an 11-foot, 8-inch standing broad jump. Simpson was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the NFL draft on April 26, 2008, making him the forty-sixth overall pick and the sixth receiver taken in the draft; and
Whereas, Jerome Simpson has brought positive recognition to the State of South Carolina and Coastal Carolina University, and the members of the House of Representatives are proud to recognize him for his achievements in football. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Jerome Simpson, former star wide receiver of the Coastal Carolina University football team, on his great athleticism, invaluable contributions to the team, and for being drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the recent NFL draft, and to wish him much success and happiness in his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jerome Simpson.
