TO AMEND CHAPTER 111 0F TITLE 59 OF THE 1976 CODE, RELATING TO EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS, BY ADDING SECTION 59-111-25, TO PROVIDE THAT MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA NATIONAL GUARD OR RESERVE COMPONENTS THAT ARE AWARDED A BRONZE STAR MEDAL, OR HIGHER MILITARY AWARD IN THE ORDER OF PRECEDENCE, FOR COMBAT OPERATIONS MAY BE ADMITTED TO ANY STATE-SUPPORTED COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY, OR POST HIGH SCHOOL TECHNICAL EDUCATION INSTITUTION FREE OF TUITION.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Chapter 111 of Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 59-111-25. A member of the South Carolina National Guard or Reserve component of the United States Armed Forces who is awarded a Bronze Star Medal, or higher military award in the order of precedence, for combat operations may be admitted to any state-supported college, university, or post high school technical education institution free of tuition so long as his work and conduct is satisfactory to the governing body of the institution, if he was a resident of this State at the time of entry into service and during service, or has been a resident of this State for at least one year and still resides in this State, provided he served honorably in a branch of the military service of the United States during a war period, as those periods are defined by Section 101 of Title 38 of the United States Code."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
