The Senate assembled at 12:00 Noon, the hour to which it stood adjourned, and was called to order by the PRESIDENT.
A quorum being present, the proceedings were opened with a devotion by the Chaplain as follows:
In Isaiah, Chapter 57, we read:
"Peace, peace, to the far and the near, says the Lord; and I will heal them. But the wicked are like the tossing sea that cannot keep still; its waters toss up mire and mud. There is no peace, says my God, for the wicked." (Isaiah 57:19-21)
Let us pray:
Holy Lord, all of us in this Chamber yearn for peace in our world. As Abraham Lincoln observed in his Second Inaugural Address (Mar. 4, 1865): "Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass along." Yet the scourge of warfare has not gone away, O God. We ask special blessings today upon the members of the 218th Brigade Combat Team, all soon to serve in Afghanistan.
Moreover, we pray for the safety and well-being of each one of our women and men in uniform already striving mightily-and bravely-for peace in many spots around the globe. Keep them safe, O God; bestow your loving care; be with families that experience cruel loss-and ultimately, Lord, bring peace.
Amen.
