A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR SENATOR DAVID L. THOMAS OF GREENVILLE FOR HIS LEADERSHIP IN FOUNDING PALMETTOPRIDE, THE DEDICATED LABORS OF WHICH HAVE HAD SUCH A REGENERATIVE AND BEAUTIFYING EFFECT ON SOUTH CAROLINA'S ROADWAYS, AND TO CONGRATULATE SENATOR THOMAS AND PALMETTOPRIDE ON THE ORGANIZATION'S TENTH ANNIVERSARY.

Whereas, with a vision to see the roadways of this great State clean and pleasurable for all who travel on them, Senator David L. Thomas of Greenville led the charge to create a legislative task force that would address citizen concern about South Carolina's highway litter; and

Whereas, the antilitter organization that resulted was renamed PalmettoPride and became a 501(c)(3) in 2002; and

Whereas, under Senator Thomas's leadership, PalmettoPride has reduced litter by fifty-nine percent on our state's highways through the efforts of its committed volunteers, who have cleaned up more than twenty-seven million pounds of litter from our state's roads, neighborhoods, forests, parks, and waterways; and

Whereas, the Keep South Carolina Beautiful network has increased to twenty-five local affiliates, and these affiliates have won national awards for programs, advertisements, and leadership; and

Whereas, to further its laudable goals, PalmettoPride has provided South Carolina law enforcement officers with grants, resources, and training vital to protecting quality of life for all South Carolinians and has awarded more than one thousand grants to schools, enforcement agencies, local governments, and community-improvement organizations; and

Whereas, these remarkable benefits to the Palmetto State have accrued to its citizens largely thanks to the foresight and concerted efforts of Senator David L. Thomas. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Senator David L. Thomas of Greenville for his leadership in founding PalmettoPride, the dedicated labors of which have had such a regenerative and beautifying effect on South Carolina's roadways, and to congratulate Senator Thomas and PalmettoPride on the organization's tenth anniversary.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Senator David L. Thomas.
