TO REQUEST ON BEHALF OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY THAT ALL MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE UNITED STATES SENATE FROM SOUTH CAROLINA VOTE IN FAVOR OF AN AMENDMENT TO THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION LIMITING TO THREE THE NUMBER OF TERMS THAT A MEMBER OF THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MAY SERVE AND LIMITING TO TWO THE NUMBER OF TERMS WHICH A MEMBER OF THE UNITED STATES SENATE MAY SERVE, AND FURTHER TO SOLICIT THE SUPPORT OF THEIR OTHER COLLEAGUES IN THE CONGRESS FOR SUCH A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.
Whereas, the United States Congress is considering an amendment to the United States Constitution which will limit to three the number of terms that a member of the United States House of Representatives may serve and which will limit to two the number of terms which a member of the United States Senate may serve; and
Whereas, upon adoption by a two-thirds vote of both houses of the Congress, and upon the subsequent ratification by three-fourths of the several states, this amendment shall become a part of the United States Constitution; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly believe that such an amendment to the United States Constitution providing for these specific term limits is of vital importance to the citizens of this State and the United States by insuring that the power and authority of the federal government exercised through the elected members of Congress will always be vested in Senators and Representatives who wish to be elected to serve their fellow citizens for a finite period of time and not to become an institutional part of the federal government; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, request and implore each member of the United States House of Representatives from South Carolina and each member of the United States Senate from South Carolina, now or hereafter serving, to vote in favor of a proposed United States constitutional amendment containing these specific limitations, and to request their colleagues in the Congress to support and vote in favor of such an amendment as well. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly request that all members of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate from South Carolina vote in favor of an amendment to the United States Constitution limiting to three the number of terms that a member of the United States House of Representatives may serve and limiting to two the number of terms which a member of the United States Senate may serve, and further solicit the support of their other colleagues in the Congress for such a constitutional amendment.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the each member of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation.
