A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF MATSON STREET IN THE TOWN OF KERSHAW BETWEEN ITS NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN INTERSECTIONS WITH UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 521 BUSINESS "SCHP PATROLMAN WALTER T. BELL MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "SCHP PATROLMAN WALTER T. BELL MEMORIAL HIGHWAY".

Whereas, South Carolina Highway Patrolman Walter T. Bell, better known as "Shine" to his family and friends, was the son of the late Thomas S. and Nettie Cauthen Bell of Kershaw; and

Whereas, he graduated from Wofford College in the class of 1926 where he served as secretary of his class. He also lettered in three sports; and

Whereas, on February 4, 1939, he was tragically killed, at the age of thirty-six, in a head-on collision with another vehicle on the United States Highway 521 Bypass in the City of Kershaw. He had been assigned to license inspection duty in Lancaster County during the day and was returning to Camden when the accident occurred at 7:30 p. m. on a Saturday evening; and

Whereas, he left behind to mourn his death a father, wife, two children, and a host of relatives and friends; and

Whereas, he had served from 1930 to 1939 with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. He paid the ultimate sacrifice-his life; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper to recognize the sacrifice that Patrolman Bell paid while protecting the citizens of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of Matson Street in the Town of Kershaw between its northern and southern intersections with United States Highway 521 Business "SCHP Patrolman Walter T. Bell Memorial Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this highway that contain the words "SCHP Patrolman Walter T. Bell Memorial Highway".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
