A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND RECOGNIZE VIVIAN BYERLY UPON HER RETIREMENT AS LEGISLATIVE NURSE FOR THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR HER YEARS OF EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, TO HER STATE, AND TO HER COMMUNITY, AND TO WISH HER WELL IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned that Vivian Byerly, Legislative Nurse for the General Assembly, will be retiring on June 2, 2011; and

Whereas, Vivian has served as a Registered Nurse for the General Assembly of South Carolina since 1997 in an exemplary manner; and

Whereas, Vivian was born and raised in Rowland, North Carolina where her father was a tobacco farmer and her mother a homemaker, and she was the youngest of four children; and

Whereas, Vivian knew at an early age that she wanted to be a nurse and after high school she enrolled in and graduated from the registered nursing program at McLeod School of Nursing in Florence, South Carolina; and

Whereas, Vivian's first training was as a student nurse at the Florence McLeod School of Nursing where the students worked in the infirmary in the evenings while studying and attending classes during the day; and

Whereas, upon graduation, her first place of employment was Byerly Hospital in Hartsville, South Carolina; and

Whereas, moving to Columbia, South Carolina in 1957, she was employed by Providence Hospital as an emergency room staff nurse and later as a shift nurse on the floors of the hospital; and

Whereas, from 1970 to 1996, Vivian was employed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Nuclear Fuel Division in Columbia as the managing nurse in their medical department. While employed for Westinghouse, Vivian handled everything from colds to employee fatalities, which she naturally handled with calm and professionalism; and

Whereas, from 1996 to the present, Vivian has been employed part-time with Dr. Stephen Serbin's Family Practice as a Registered Nurse; and

Whereas, she has spent her life in service to her community and State as a member of the South Carolina Occupation Health Nurse Association and was once honored with the Professional Occupational Health Woman of the Year award; and

Whereas, Vivian is highly respected by her colleagues as a Legislative Nurse and she provides preventive care, health screenings, and serves as a role model to her profession and has had a positive impact on numerous people within the legislative arena; and

Whereas, as a nurse managing the Doctor of the Day program for the State, Vivian has cared for Senators, Representatives, legislative staff, pages, lobbyists, and visitors during her fourteen years of service to this State; and

Whereas, Vivian also worked in Project Readiness, a medical wellness screening program that screened State Law Enforcement officers, including the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, and the S.C. Highway Patrol, during her spare time on weekends; and

Whereas, not only is she the mother to Dena Byerly, she is a devoted nurse, friend, advisor, and listener to countless individuals; and

Whereas, we are greatly pleased to have this opportunity to salute Vivian and accord her special recognition for her commitment to health care and for rendering outstanding service to the members of the General Assembly as a Legislative Nurse. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend and recognize Vivian Byerly upon her retirement as Legislative Nurse for the General Assembly for her years of exemplary service to the General Assembly, to her State, and to her community, and to wish her well in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Vivian Byerly.
