TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MASON GATES, A STUDENT AT AYNOR HIGH SCHOOL IN HORRY COUNTY, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR WINNING THE SOUTH CAROLINA EDUCATION OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE'S INNOVATION VIDEO 2012 GOLD AWARD.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina take great pleasure in commending outstanding students in the Palmetto State like Mason Gates; and

Whereas, for producing a video entitled, "We Are Prepared," Mason Gates won the Innovation Video 2012 Gold Award sponsored by the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee (EOC), and he was presented with an iPad on Monday, January 14, 2013, at Aynor High School; and

Whereas, his two-minute video addressed the question, "How is my school preparing me and my fellow students to be more innovative?"; and

Whereas, the South Carolina EOC invited middle and high school students throughout the State to use video to communicate to educators, policymakers, and the community about how they would change South Carolina schools to be more innovative or how their school is already helping to prepare students for a world that values innovation; and

Whereas, the contest rules stipulated that the video could be no more than two minutes in length and that educators could advise students but could not take on a significant role in creating the video; and

Whereas, a panel of judges from the South Carolina Educational Television, South Carolina State Library, and University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communications reviewed each entry to select one Gold Award winner from both middle school and high school contestants and two Silver Award winners from the middle school contestants and two from the high school contestants; and

Whereas, although no public funds were used to pay for contest prizes, each Gold Award winner received an iPad, and the two Silver Award winners received a flip video camera; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly appreciate the pride and recognition that Mason Gates has brought to his school and to his community, and they look to hear of his continued success in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mason Gates, a student at Aynor High School in Horry County, and congratulate him for winning the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee's Innovation Video 2012 Gold Award.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mason Gates.
