A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR JAY SCHWEDLER FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS PRESIDENT AND CEO OF SUMTER ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR HIS SELECTION AS A WINNER OF A "40 UNDER 40" AWARD FROM DEVELOPMENT COUNSELLORS INTERNATIONAL.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn of the selection of Jay Schwedler of Sumter County as a winner of the "40 Under 40" award by Development Counsellors International, the first awards program to recognize young talent in the economic development profession; and

Whereas, managing the awards program, the New York-based firm Development Counsellors International (DCI) considered a leader in marketing places and specializing in economic development and tourism marketing and has worked for more than four hundred cities, regions, states, and countries since its establishment in 1960; and

Whereas, the five-member selection committee of the award chose the winners from a pool of more than one hundred fifty candidates based on the exceptional contributions of the candidates to the economic development industry and who represent a bright future for the economic development world, such as Jay Schwedler; and

Whereas, a native of Michigan, Mr. Schwedler earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural and applied economics from Clemson University; and

Whereas, his first leadership role was as the executive director of the Lee County Development Board. In 1999, he returned to his home state of Michigan to run the economic development efforts of Lapeer County, and later became managing director of international business at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation; and

Whereas, Jay returned to South Carolina in 2005 as the assistant director of the Florence County Economic Development Partnership, and in 2006, he was hired by Sumter County as president and CEO of Sumter Economic Development; and

Whereas, in 2011, Sumter County boasted of his outstanding service to the area with the announcement that Continental Tire North America had chosen Sumter County as the site of its new tire manufacturing plant, estimated to bring $534 million dollars and 1700 jobs to the community; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the significant service that Jay Schwedler has rendered to Sumter Economic Development and for the economic impact his work has made on the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Jay Schwedler for his outstanding service as president and CEO of Sumter Economic Development and congratulate him for his selection as a winner of a "40 Under 40" award from Development Counsellors International.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Jay Schwedler.
