A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR ILEANA ARVELO OF SUMTER FOR HER NEARLY THREE DECADES OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE GIRL SCOUTS OF THE USA, TO CONGRATULATE HER ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT, AND TO WISH HER MUCH SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives has learned that Ileana Arvelo of Sumter will begin a well-deserved retirement after many years of faithful and outstanding service to the Girl Scouts of the USA, most recently in the Palmetto State; and

Whereas, Mrs. Arvelo, a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, began her work with the Girl Scouts in 1985 as a volunteer with the San Antonio Council in Texas. Having trained for the position, she took up her duties as a first-time Girl Scout leader and received the organization's Outstanding Leader Award for her fine service; and

Whereas, over the years, she also served as a volunteer with the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council (Tucson, Arizona), Pine to Prairie Girl Scout Council (Grand Forks, North Dakota), USA Girl Scouts Overseas (Germany), and Fannie Ivey Girl Scout Service Unit (Sumter County). During this time, her duties included serving as a troop leader, event coordinator, language translator, service unit chair, travel coordinator, service unit treasurer and cookie manager, council intermediate and master trainer, summer camp assistant director, and council delegate to the Girl Scout National Convention; and

Whereas, in 2005, the Girl Scout Council of the Congaree Area (now Girl Scouts of South Carolina--Mountains to Midlands, Inc.) welcomed Ileana Arvelo as a new staff member, and with her usual energy, warmth, and enthusiasm, she has served as community development manager for Sumter and Kershaw counties since that time; and

Whereas, as community development manager, she has seen her efforts abundantly rewarded. Among other exciting developments, membership has increased by 12 percent, and fifty new volunteers and six new sponsors have come onboard; and

Whereas, Ileana Arvelo has not gone unappreciated for her service to the Girls Scouts. In addition to the Outstanding Leader Award, she has received the Outstanding Volunteer Award, Appreciation Pin, and Honor Pin. She was also named Volunteer of the Year by her post commander in Germany; and

Whereas, Mrs. Arvelo finds strength for the accomplishment of her duties in the strong support of her family, her husband, José, Sr.; the couple's three children, José, Jr., Anita, and Maria; and three grandchildren; and

Whereas, to recognize Ileana Arvelo's devoted service to the Girl Scouts of the USA, the Fannie Ivey Girl Scout Service Unit will honor her at its Leaders' Appreciation Banquet on April 19, 2013, in Sumter; and

Whereas, grateful for Mrs. Arvelo's unwavering commitment to nurturing this state's most precious resource, its children, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in recognizing her many years of service to the Girl Scouts of the USA. The members wish her well as she enters retirement and trust she will find much enjoyment in the more leisurely pace of the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor Ileana Arvelo of Sumter for her nearly three decades of dedicated service to the Girl Scouts of the USA, congratulate her on the occasion of her retirement, and wish her much success and fulfillment in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Ileana Arvelo.
