VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR TERESA WILSON FOR HER OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE CITY OF COLUMBIA AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON BEING NAMED THE CITY MANAGER FOR THE CITY OF COLUMBIA.
Whereas, the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that Teresa Wilson was recently named the city manager for the City of Columbia; and
Whereas, after she earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of South Carolina Honors College in 1996, she completed a juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999, where she was a member of the Black Law Students Association and served as a Richland County School District One mentor; and
Whereas, upon completion of her law degree, Ms. Wilson served as a law clerk for the Honorable L. Casey Manning of the Fifth Judicial Circuit in Columbia; and
Whereas, from 2000 to 2005 she taught language arts, reading, and English at St. Andrews Middle School for three years and at Spring Valley High School for one year; and
Whereas, she served the University of South Carolina in the Office of the President in government and community relations from 2005 to 2007; and
Whereas, in February 2007, Teresa Wilson became the director of governmental affairs and community relations for the City of Columbia, which included conducting lobbying efforts on behalf of the City, serving as a liaison for intergovernmental relations, coordinating constituent services, administering grants, and managing the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act; and
Whereas, when she became assistant city manager for the City of Columbia in 2011, her previous duties folded into a new role. She has directed community programs, economic development, and government services for the City and has served as a member of Columbia's senior management team, directing governmental affairs and community relations, economic and community development, grants administration, development corporations, the Office of Business Opportunities, and the Office of the Mayor; and
Whereas, a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, Ms. Wilson has served on the executive board of the Central Midlands Council of Governments, on the South Carolina Legislative Committee's Municipal Association, and on St. Peter's Catholic School Board; and she is a member of the Junior League of Columbia; the Columbia Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; and the University of South Carolina Alumni Association; and
Whereas, she was named one of the Top Women of Influence by the Southeast Small Business Magazine, one of the 50 Most Influential People in 2011 by the Columbia Business Monthly; and one of the City of Columbia's "Top 20 Under 40" Business Professionals in 2008; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Senate appreciates the dedication and standard of excellence that Teresa Wilson has brought to the City of Columbia, and the members look to hear of her continued success in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Teresa Wilson for her outstanding service to the City of Columbia and congratulate her upon being named the city manager for the City of Columbia.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Teresa Wilson.
