TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERSECTION LOCATED AT THE JUNCTURE OF SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAYS 6 AND 45 IN ORANGEBURG COUNTY "CORPORAL WILLIAM HOWELL, JR. INTERSECTION" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS INTERSECTION THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "CORPORAL WILLIAM HOWELL, JR. INTERSECTION".
Whereas, Corporal William Howell, Jr., was born on June 12, 1961, the son of William and Mary Howell; and
Whereas, he was married to his devoted wife Michelle Howell and together they reared four wonderful sons; and
Whereas, he began his career in law enforcement in the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department where he rose to the rank of sergeant
over a five-year period of employment; and
Whereas, in 2005, he joined the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Department and at the time of his death had attained the rank of corporal; and
Whereas, he was a very active member of Silas United Methodist Church where he served as the church organist and keyboardist; and
Whereas, on May 3, 2008, while responding to a domestic violence call in Holly Hill, Corporal Howell tragically lost his life; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper to pay a lasting tribute to Corporal William Howell, Jr., by naming a highway intersection in Orangeburg County in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the intersection located at the juncture of South Carolina Highways 6 and 45 in Orangeburg County "Corporal William Howell, Jr. Intersection" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this intersection that contain the words "Corporal William Howell, Jr. Intersection".
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
