TO AMEND SECTION 59-1-425, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE STATUTORY SCHOOL TERM, COLLEGIAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS, AND MAKE-UP DAYS, SO AS TO PROVIDE A SCHOOL DISTRICT MAY USE INSTRUCTIONAL HOURS OR INSTRUCTIONAL DAYS TO SATISFY REQUIREMENTS FOR SCHOOL CALENDARS, COLLEGIAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS, AND MAKE-UP DAYS, AND TO PROVIDE A DATE BEFORE WHICH THE OPENING DATE OF A SCHOOL MAY BEGIN UNLESS THE SCHOOL OPERATES ON A YEAR-ROUND MODIFIED CALENDAR.
Amend Title To Conform
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Chapter 5, Title 53 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 53-5-65. Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, the local school districts of this State shall observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Memorial Day as legal holidays and schools and offices of the districts must be closed on those dates."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
