TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR KENNY CHESNEY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CAREER IN COUNTRY MUSIC AND TO WELCOME HIM TO THE PALMETTO STATE FOR HIS NO SHOES NATION TOUR IN COLUMBIA.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Kenny Chesney will perform at Williams-Brice Stadium in the Capital City on Saturday, May 4, 2013; and
Whereas, Kenny Chesney grew up in Luttrell, Tennessee, the birthplace of country-legend Chet Atkins, and he became serious about a music career during his college years after he received a guitar as a gift and joined the university's bluegrass band; and
Whereas, his first album, In My Wildest Dreams, was released in 1993 and sold 100,000 copies, and in 1999, he wrote the tune "You Had Me from Hello," after watching Renee Zellweger's performance in the 1996 film Jerry Maguire; and
Whereas, he has received numerous industry honors, including several Entertainer of the Year awards at both the Country Music Association Awards and the Academy of Country Music Awards, and he has been named number eight on Billboard's Top Touring Artists of the Decade; and
Whereas, an avid football fan, he created a song for ESPN's college-football coverage and was honored as Tennessean of the Year by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in February 2011; and
Whereas, before the announcement of seventeen stadium dates on his No Shoes Nation Tour, he had already performed in eighty-five stadium shows in his career, which is a country-world record. His stadium tours in the 2000s reached more than nine million fans and were documented in the 2010 theatrical concert film Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D; and
Whereas, in April 2008, he stepped onto the stage to grace Williams-Brice Stadium with a concert and broke his foot on the very first song of the show, so he wanted to return for the fans and give them a concert they could remember for years to come; and
Whereas, Global Spectrum and The Messina Group have partnered to bring country singer Chesney back to Columbia for the concert, the second stop in the No Shoes Nation Tour; and
Whereas, the concert will feature the GRAMMY-Award winning Zac Brown Band, whose latest album Uncaged debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 200, and special guests the Eli Young Band and Kacey Musgraves; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciates the incredible artistry of Kenny Chesney, and the members are pleased to have his much-anticipated No Shoes Nation Tour in Columbia. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Kenny Chesney for his outstanding career in country music and welcome him to the Palmetto State for his No Shoes Nation Tour in Columbia.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Kenny Chesney.
