TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DAN GRAY FOR HIS YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF HORRY COUNTY AND TO THE PALMETTO STATE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to pause in its deliberations to commend Dan Gray for his outstanding contributions to business and industry in the State and for his significant role in the education of young citizens for today's competitive global market; and
Whereas, a native of Horry County with Waccamaw family roots dating from the 1730s, Mr. Gray earned a bachelor's in industrial management from Clemson University and served with distinction in the United States Marine Corps as a rifle company platoon sergeant; and
Whereas, he heads the Dan Gray Company, a Myrtle Beach management firm, and he is a managing member of River Oaks Golf Plantation and president of Grayco Steel Corporation, one of the most prominent structural-steel and prison-equipment contactors in the Carolinas for more than half a century; and
Whereas, the first chairman of the board and president of the North South All-Star Football Game Committee, Inc., he has served in such civic leadership capacities as the past president of the Chicora Rotary Club, past vice president of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, and past chairman of the board of the Horry County Chapter of the American Cancer Society; and
Whereas, using his expertise in public affairs, Mr. Gray served as the past chairman of the Horry County Planning Commission, the past chairman of the Horry County Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee, the past vice chairman of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center Advisory Committee, and a past member of the South Carolina Hall of Fame Board of Directors; and
Whereas, in 1990, Governor Carroll Campbell appointed him to the South Carolina State Private Industry Council; in 1994, he was named chairman of the Waccamaw Regional Private Industry Council; and in 1996, Governor David Beasley appointed him to the state Job Training Coordinating Council; and
Whereas, upon recommendation of the 1st Congressional District legislative delegation, he has served since 2001 on the South Carolina State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education and since 2003 as a member of the Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) Foundation Board. He previously served as an instructor at HGTC in 1966 and maintained his association there through Grayco Steel Corporation, even before joining the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education; and
Whereas, Mr. Gray currently serves on the Horry County Solid Waste Authority Board and the Clemson University State Extension Advisory Council; and
Whereas, honored with the Realtor Image Award of the Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors and as the 1997 Volunteer of the Year Award for the State of South Carolina by the Job Training Coordinating Council, he serves on the boards of Helping Hand and the Waccamaw Regional Education Center and is the founding chairman of the Horry Industrial Alliance; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the noteworthy contributions that Dan Gray has made to the economy, industry, and workforce in our State, and the members express their appreciation to this distinguished son of the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dan Gray for his years of dedicated service to the citizens of Horry County and to the Palmetto State.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dan Gray.
