A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE CLOVER HOLLY GATLING WOLF OF LEXINGTON COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY YEARS OF CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Clover Holly Gatling Wolf of Lexington County will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on February 5, 2014; and

Whereas, born on February 5, 1914, in the early part of the twentieth century, she has witnessed many remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international developments that have spanned the globe from that time into the second decade of the twenty-first century; and

Whereas, the only child of Herbert and Florence Holly, Clover Holly was born in Brooklyn, New York, and met her beloved husband the late William L. Gatling, Jr., at Duke University. They were married in 1932 and together reared three fine children: the late Priscilla Laidlaw, Holly Gatling, and Laddie Gatling; and

Whereas, after working to support her husband through Virginia Theological Seminary, she became a stay-at-home mother, and continued her college education which had been interrupted by marriage; and

Whereas, from the University of South Carolina, she earned a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a doctor of philosophy, the latter at the age of sixty-six; and

Whereas, she enjoyed a career as a radio talk show host for WAGA and WSB in Atlanta and for WTOP in Washington, D.C., and later taught English at Midlands Technical College; and

Whereas, in 1984, Clover and William Gatling moved into Still Hopes Retirement Community, where she has continued to live since he passed away in 1989; in 2011, she moved into assisted living at Still Hopes and is currently the longest resident residing in the Still Hopes Retirement community; and

Whereas, at the age of eighty-three, Clover Gatling married her second husband, Robert A. Wolf, a fellow resident of Still Hopes and an aeronautical engineer who had worked on the development of the Bell Helicopter. The newlyweds flew off on their honeymoon in a Bell Helicopter; and

Whereas, Mrs. Wolf was widowed again in 1998, and continuing to lead a very active life, she spent many years visiting friends, reading to those who were visually impaired, and enjoying a busy, fulfilling life; and

Whereas, she remains an avid reader of the New Yorker magazine, loves literature about Ireland, enjoys the company of her family, including eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and attends Sunday Mass at Good Shepherd Catholic Church; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to honor such a distinguished South Carolinian as Clover Gatling, at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday and join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Clover Holly Gatling Wolf of Lexington County, on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many years of continued health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Clover Holly Gatling Wolf.
