TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE HEATHWOOD HALL GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2014 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Heathwood Hall girls varsity basketball team of Richland County on Saturday, March 1, 2014, won the class AAA South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) Girls Basketball Championship by defeating a fine Northwood Academy team at the Sumter Civic Center; and
Whereas, to the delight of their fans, the Lady Highlanders pressed the Lady Chargers of Northwood Academy and hit the backboards against them, defeating their opponents 66-58 to capture the state title; and
Whereas, four Lady Highlanders were named to the All-State team: senior standout A'ja Wilson, Gadson Lefft, Victoria Dickerson, and Chelsea Joseph; and
Whereas, for the last five years consecutively, the Lady Highlanders have finished in the top four teams in the State, and their record for the 2014 season was 23-4; and
Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, agility, and accuracy, Head Coach John O'Cain and Assistant Coach Jerome Dickerson capitalized on their own athletic ability and training for the past five years to forge a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the court; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition that the Heathwood Hall basketball players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Heathwood Hall girls varsity basketball team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season, and congratulate them for winning the 2014 South Carolina Independent School Association Class AAA State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Chris Hinchey, Heathwood Hall's Upper School Head, and Coach John O'Cain.
