TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE WALHALLA CHAPTER OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION ON THE CELEBRATION OF THEIR ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY.

Whereas, one hundred years ago on July 7, 1916, sixteen women from Walhalla met at the home of Mrs. Harry Hughs to formally organize a Daughters of the American Revolution chapter; and

Whereas, the chapter met twice to established bylaws, choose a color and a flower, and select a motto, which is "The noble deeds of our ancestors are placed in the memory of the living"; and

Whereas, the first regular meeting was held on October 10, 1916. That gathering included a program on the current events in DAR circles, causes of the Revolution, conditions existing in South Carolina, a reading, and a vocal selection; and

Whereas, since the DAR's three themes are education, patriotism, and historic preservation, the women in the Walhalla chapter established the Tamassee DAR School, which opened in 1919; and

Whereas, the members of the Walhalla DAR Chapter have worked tirelessly over the years to support the themes of the DAR. During World War II, members of the Walhalla Chapter were also members of the local Red Cross. And this year, the chapter co-hosted the annual charity golf tournament that raised $32,000 for the Tamassee DAR School; and

Whereas, the chapter's ninety-nine members, in keeping with the DAR's time-honored traditions, continue to support these themes and serve the community in many ways during this anniversary year; and

Whereas, in celebration of their one hundredth anniversary, the Walhalla Chapter hosted a grave dedication ceremony for Anna Verner Stribling (1820-1901), a Real Daughter buried in Oconee County. When she joined the DAR, which was founded in 1890, her father, John Verner, Jr. (1763-1853) had fought in the Revolution; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate are pleased to honor this organization for their dedication to the betterment of their community through education, patriotism, and historic preservation, and the members wish them many more years of success in their work. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate the Walhalla Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on the celebration of their one hundredth anniversary.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Walhalla DAR Chapter.
