VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE CALHOUN ACADEMY BASEBALL TEAM ON AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEIR TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS ON WINNING THE 2016 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION'S CLASS AA CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the members of the Senate are pleased to learn that the Calhoun Academy baseball team took top honors at the 2016 South Carolina Independent School Association's Class AA State Championship held at Laurence Manning Academy; and
Whereas, the Cavaliers' second out of three 3-2 win against Hilton Head Prep was enough to clench the baseball team's second championship in two years. The team ended the season with a 19-7 overall record; and
Whereas, the Cavaliers scored three runs early in the second inning, and held that score while the Dolphins finished the game with three hits and two runs; and
Whereas, Chipper Brown and Blake Huddleston were hit by pitches to begin the second inning. The Dolphins' starting pitcher Reese Irwin then settled in to register one of his five strikeouts. But a bunted ball from Christopher Phillips was too challenging for Irwin to scoop up, loading the bases with Cavaliers. Lawton Wright promptly drew a walk to send Brown home. One strikeout later, Fuller Prickett grounded into an error, plating Huddleston and Phillips for the 3-0 lead; and
Whereas, scoring when they had the chance early paid off big, as Calhoun Academy only had two runners reach base safely in the final eighteen batters; and
Whereas, the Dolphins received their first run after having two players hit by pitches. A fielder's choice groundout put a player on third, before back-to-back walks plated him; and
Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, strategy, and quickness, Head Coach Bill Spiers used on his own training to make a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the field; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the pride and recognition the Calhoun Academy baseball players have brought to their school and community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Calhoun Academy baseball team on an outstanding season and congratulate their team, coaches, and school officials on winning the South Carolina Independent Schools Association's Class AA Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Head Coach Bill Spiers.
