VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF DARRYL THOMAS MURPHY OF BEAUFORT COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Darryl Thomas Murphy at the age of fifty on January 20, 2016; and
Whereas, born in Buffalo, New York, on October 27, 1965, he was the son of affectionate and devoted parents, William and Shirley Rutledge Murphy, who reared him in a loving Christian home; and
Whereas, young Darryl made an early profession of faith in Jesus Christ and served actively at Calvary Baptist Church and in the Baptist Student Union youth and adult choirs; and
Whereas, at the age of seventeen, Mr. Murphy received a scholarship from the American Field Service International Intercultural Summer Program to study the culture of the country Kenya in Africa; and
Whereas, a school orator at Bennett High School in Buffalo, he offered a powerful rendition of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech," for which he received glowing accolades. He participated in baseball and basketball and graduated in 1984; and
Whereas, Darryl Murphy earned a bachelor's degree in political science and urban planning from Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia, and a master's degree in public administration from the University of New York in Buffalo. He was enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, with a passion for social justice in African-American history and curious about his family heritage, he relocated to South Carolina where he accepted a position on St. Helena Island as curator at Penn Center. He also served as the exhibition and collections manager at the I. P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium Exhibition at South Carolina State University; and
Whereas, Mr. Murphy served his community on the Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce and was a founding member of the nationally acclaimed "Aunt Pearlie Sue & the Gullah Kinfolk." He was the CEO and founder of Crossroads Historical Tours of Beaufort and helped to reestablish the Burton-Dale-Beaufort Branch of the NAACP, serving as its president from 2012 to 2014; and
Whereas, a contributing writer for SAGE Encyclopedia of African Cultural Heritage in North America, he cohosted Open Mic radio program on Saturday afternoons on WKWQ Gullah People Radio; and
Whereas, Darryl married his beloved wife, the former Connie Elizabeth Singleton, on May 30, 1998, and together they reared a fine son, Wesley; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Darryl Murphy and for the example of sacrifice and kindness he set for all who knew him. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Darryl Thomas Murphy of Beaufort County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his large and loving family and his many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to the wife and to the parents of Darryl Thomas Murphy.
