VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND CLINTON DAVIS OF RICHLAND COUNTY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING WORK IN SUPPORT OF HOMELESS VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES THROUGHOUT THE MIDLANDS AND UPSTATE IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST AS HE CONTINUES TO SERVE OUR VETERANS.
Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is pleased to learn of Clinton Davis's fine work in support of our veterans, first through the Alston Wilkes Veterans Home and now through the Alston Wilkes Society and Palmetto State Base Camp; and
Whereas, Clinton Davis served in the U.S. Marine Corps (1975-1981), achieving the rank of sergeant, but then fell on hard times. He became homeless and lived on the streets of Columbia. However, in time he was accepted into the Alston Wilkes Veterans Home, a transitional residence for homeless veterans, and began what would prove to be a life-changing experience there; and
Whereas, having successfully made the transition out of homelessness, Clinton Davis undertook to serve Columbia-area veterans who were still in the homeless state. He began as assistant resident manager of the Alston Wilkes Veterans Home, a position he filled from April to August 2003. From August 2005 to August 2007, he served as the organization's senior resident manager, and from November 2007 to June 2008, as its case manager; and
Whereas, since June 2008, Mr. Davis has served as director of veteran services for the Alston Wilkes Society in Columbia and Greenville and as executive director of Palmetto State Base Camp; and
Whereas, as director of veteran services, Clinton Davis manages all daily operations of two transitional housing facilities for homeless male veterans, these facilities being located in Columbia and Greenville. During the last several years, he also has written and received multiple Supportive Services for Veteran Families grants totaling more than seven million dollars. These funds are used to help prevent veteran homelessness by assisting qualifying veterans and their families in transitioning to, or maintaining, permanent housing; and
Whereas, Clinton Davis, as executive director of Palmetto State Base Camp, supervises and manages seven single-family transitional residential properties throughout the Midlands, where shelter, food, and comfort are available to otherwise homeless and economically disadvantaged military veterans. Further, he has built significant relationships with other local service-based organizations and nonprofits to fill gaps in veterans' outreach services; and
Whereas, a skilled communicator with a reputation for creating genuine rapport between homeless veteran clients and professionals, Clinton Davis has demonstrated strength in hands-on leadership, organizational management, and strategic planning and has increased positive long-term outcomes for residents within transitional housing facilities servicing homeless veterans; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly recognize that the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of its communities, and the vitality of American society as a whole depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of individuals like Clinton Davis who use their talents and resources to serve others. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and commend Clinton Davis of Richland County for his outstanding work in support of homeless veterans and their families throughout the Midlands and Upstate in South Carolina and wish him all the best as he continues to serve our veterans.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Clinton Davis.
