TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF JAMES KENNEDY ALEXANDER OF LEE COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of James Kennedy Alexander at the age of eighty-six on Friday, April 15, 2016; and
Whereas, born in Bishopville on December 1, 1929, he was a son of the late William Ray Alexander, Sr., and the late Mary Richardson Kennedy, and he graduated from Bishopville High School in 1947; and
Whereas, in 1952, Mr. Alexander earned a bachelor's degree in agronomy from Clemson College when the school was still a military institute. At Clemson he achieved the rank of battalion commander, was elected president of the school's senior council, and was voted an outstanding senior; and
Whereas, in the proud tradition of the sons of South Carolina, he served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 and then became a lifelong farmer in Lee County; and
Whereas, devoted to his community, Mr. Alexander was a co-founder of Robert E. Lee Academy and a co-owner of Interstate Tractor Company. He enjoyed membership in the Masonic Lodge, operating a ham radio, and making model airplanes; and
Whereas, a devoted member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, he served as a member of the church choir for over fifty years; and
Whereas, together with his beloved wife of sixty-two years, Ida Ruth Johnson Alexander, he reared four fine children: James K. Alexander, Jr., of Seneca; Rosemary Alexander Carter of Lexington, Kentucky; Rebecca L. Alexander of Florence; and Jeffrey R. Alexander of Columbia. These children blessed their parents with five adoring grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of James Kennedy Alexander and for the example of selflessness and service he set for all who knew him. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of James Kennedy Alexander of Lee County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his large and loving family and his many friends.
