VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND CHERAW NATIVE JOSHUAH CAMPBELL FOR HIS ACADEMIC AND ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENTS AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM UPON HIS GRADUATION FROM HARVARD COLLEGE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that Cheraw native Joshuah Campbell, having successfully completed courses of study in music and French, has earned two bachelor's degrees and will graduate from Harvard College in May 2016; and
Whereas, the son of Mr. Brian and Mrs. Linda Campbell, Joshuah graduated in 2012 as the first African-American valedictorian of Cheraw High School in forty years; and
Whereas, in that same year, Joshuah, who credits his faith as a source of strength, accomplished a great life goal and matriculated at Harvard College. He often counts his extracurricular engagement with the arts at Harvard as his most formative educational experience. While at Harvard, he has enjoyed a variety of artistic platforms, starting with his first foray into college theatre with Harvard BlackC.A.S.T. For two years, he sang with the world-renowned Harvard Krokodiloes, Harvard's oldest a cappella singing group. With this all-male ensemble of twelve, Joshuah has traveled to more than fifteen countries and has sung for various celebrities and dignitaries. Joshuah is currently a member of the prestigious Hasty Pudding Theatricals, Harvard VoxJazz (a six-part vocal jazz ensemble), the Kuuma Singers of Harvard College, and the University Choir; and
Whereas, he is proud to have completed one of the first performance-based thesis projects through Harvard's music department, where his work focused on black American musicians in Paris. This project was awarded a Thomas T. Hoopes Prize, and Joshuah also received the Robert Levin Prize for Musical Performance; and
Whereas, although being an academic is close to his heart, Joshuah hopes to find work in New York performing as a singer and actor after graduation. In addition, he hopes to discover ways to share himself with others while teaching them how to find joy in the arts. He's also thinking about spending a year in Paris; and
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the dedication to excellence exhibited in the lives of outstanding students like Joshuah Campbell, and the members look to hear of his continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend Cheraw native Joshuah Campbell for his academic and artistic achievements and congratulate him upon his graduation from Harvard College.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Joshuah Campbell.
